He located the source of the smoke at a commercial building complex located at 840 Main Street. He found the rear of the building was on fire, fully engulfed. The complex contained three separate businesses, Coastside Dentistry, Ellen Joseph Gallery and Main Street Hair Design.

Deputy Laughlin notified County Communications of his findings and requested Fire respond to his location. Coastal Deputies also responded to the scene to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

While waiting for Fire personnel to arrive, Deputy Laughlin and Deputy John Sanchez used fire extinguishers from their patrol vehicles to control the spread of the fire. They extinguished most of the visible flames; however Fire personnel later located some internal fire areas that had to be extinguished.

Fire personnel did not find anything suspicious and the fire is believed to be the result of an electrical problem.

###

MEDIA ONLY CONTACT: Lt.
City Council to Discuss Downtown Parking Pay Stations

HALF MOON BAY, CA – The Half Moon Bay City Council will meet on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:00 PM to discuss a possible parking pay station program in downtown Half Moon Bay. The study session will cover research findings and ask the City Council if they are interested in continuing to pursue a program.

During the 2011-12 budget process, the City Council considered almost 100 ideas from Council, staff, and community members. Parking pay stations were just one of the ideas that the City Council directed staff to investigate. Other cities have experienced benefits from parking programs that range from increased customer satisfaction to increased revenue for unfunded needs.

“Paid parking benefits visitors, the businesses and the City,” says Vice Mayor Allan Alifano. “Visitors will benefit from more reliably available parking stalls, business will benefit from increased customer turnover, and the City could receive additional revenue for City services.”

The study session will also highlight the potential for lighting the downtown street trees as electrical infrastructure will be needed for the pay stations.

The study session will be held on Tuesday, October 18 at the Ted Adcock Community Center at 535 Kelly Ave. in Half Moon Bay beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The property, vacant land abutting Highway 1 and often referred to as the “Glencree” property, is located south of Grand View Terrace and immediately adjacent to the Beachwood property.

The VandenBerghes have a great love of Half Moon Bay and have decided to donate the property to the City rather than continue the development process. Ron began coming to Half Moon Bay with his father in 1947 and the couple has been visiting since 1954 when they were teenagers. “We have many happy memories here and would like to give back to Half Moon Bay,” says Ron VandenBerghe, “and we believe the land will be a valuable asset to the City of Half Moon Bay for public purposes….”

Mayor Marina Fraser believes this is an extraordinarily generous and exciting gift. “A land donation provides incredible flexibility for public future uses and we are so grateful to the VandenBerghes. I love this community and am very happy that others want it to thrive as much as I do,” she says.

“While the City has no immediate plans for the property,” states Interim City Manager Michael Dolder, “it is another positive step moving Half Moon Bay forward.”

The City Council will formally consider acceptance of the property and recognize the VandenBerghes at its next regular meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, at the Ted Adcock Center, located at 535 Kelly Avenue, Half Moon Bay.

Community Partnership Extends Use of Ocean View Playground

Community Partnership Extends Use of Ocean View Playground
Adjustments and repairs provide temporary access to playground
Council to thank community volunteer April 19

April 12, 2011

HALF MOON BAY, CA – The City of Half Moon Bay and the Coastside Mother’s Club recently partnered to fundraise and replace outdated playground equipment at Ocean View Park. That project, and the imminent demise of the current structure caught the attention of local resident and father, David Eblovi. Mr. Eblovi has many years of specialized experience, knowledge, and professional contacts, as well as a personal passion for restoration. In an attempt to temporarily extend the use of the Ocean View playground while fundraising efforts are underway for replacement, Mr. Eblovi generously donated his expertise and time to the City.

“My family uses the playground on a regular basis and I was excited to be able to use both my personal technical experience and where necessary my personal and professional relationships to help keep it open until everything was in place for the installation of a replacement structure.” says Mr. Eblovi. The City facilitated a quick consultation with two resident playground inspectors, who worked with David to quickly identify the practicality of remedying the numerous issues that were identified in the original report. The adjustments and repairs that have been made are not intended to be permanent, but have successfully and innovatively mitigated all immediate safety issues. The inspectors confirmed that full replacement was still inevitable. “The City and David have made a lot of families very happy by finding a way to keep the play structure in place while we conduct our fundraising efforts.” says Kristen O’Brien from the Coastside Mother’s Club.

Initially, the City looked to secure replacement parts to extend the life of the play structure. However, due to the age of the structure and modifications to industry standards, suitable replacement parts are not available and the manufacturer recommended removal of the structure. The temporary fixes that David was able to complete won’t last forever, but they will ensure that our youth can safely use the playground while fundraising efforts are underway. “This is a perfect example of community volunteers offering creative solutions and personal expertise for the benefit of the entire community,” says Mayor Naomi Patridge.

The City Council will recognize Mr. Eblovi at the next regular City Council meeting, Tuesday, April 19 at 7:00 PM at the Ted Adcock Community Center, 535 Kelly Avenue.
